EXHIBITS

For countless generations, Squamish people hunted, fished, gathered resources, engaged in battle, and welcomed visitors from their canoes. This special exhibition, a partnership between the Vancouver Maritime Museum and the Squamish Nation, will take visitors through the lifecycle of a Squamish canoe —— from its roots in a stand of local temperate rainforest, through the hands of Squamish craftsmen, and throughout the Salish Sea.
In the J. Torben Karlshoej Gallery

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Vancouver Police’s nautical
activities we will be telling the story of this maritime arm of the
police. The exhibit consists of photographs illustrating the Unit’s history and how it has grown and developed.
In memory of John Salisbury John Salisbury was born October 27, 1925. He trained as a paratrooper
near the end of the World War II. He was involved in mining in the
Yukon and enjoyed taking mining courses at BCIT. He was also in the
plumbing business for many years. Involvement in Empire Auto Parts in
several locations led to the establishment of a number of long lasting
partnerships.
He will be missed by Joyce Matthews of Burnaby and the Matthews family,
as well as his long time partners and friends from other parts of BC.
His many friends in the Pender Harbour area will miss his regular short
visits which always began with “What’s new?”
John generously gave the museum an endowment gift of $500,000 before he
passed away on September 23, a few short weeks ago. The endowment is for the ongoing future maintenance of the St. Roch so
that future generations may enjoy and connect with this unique vessel
and her role in Canadian arctic history.
Thank you, John, for your wonderful generosity and vision.
Sincerely
Simon Robinson
